665,950. Railway rail anchors. HYLE, J. A., and BUCHEK, L. J. Oct. 20, 1949. No. '26914/49. Class 104 (ii). A rail anchor is formed from a longitudinally grooved steel bar 10, Fig. 2, punched downwardly intermediate its ends 14, 15 by means of a die which spreads the metal to form a pair of substantially parallel vertical walls 12 separated by an opening 13 of a width greater than the original width of the bar and extending completely through the bar, and the end 14 is bent to form an oblique arm 16a, Fig. 4, with a horizontal extension 17 terminating in an angular jaw 18 which engages under the edge of the base flange 20 of the rail, whilst the end 15 is bent downwardly at 23 and then inwardly between the side walls 12 and again upwardly until it has a form substantially that of a letter S. The resilience of the anchor is increased 'by constructing it so that before attachment to a rail the jaw 18 is disposed at a slightly higher elevation than the lower gripping surface of the C-jaw provided at the opposite side of the rail by the parts 25, 27 of the S-shaped spring. The anchor is intended to be positioned with one of the vertical walls 12 in abutment with the adjacent side of a crosstie or sleeper.
