Abstract

665,649. Producing photographic stencils. AUTOTYPE CO., Ltd. March 8, 1950 [April 1, 1949], No. 8972/49. Class 98 (ii). A photographic film for use in the production of a printing stencil comprises a layer of gelatine containing a light-sensitive iron salt supported on a sheet of material which is sufficiently waterresistant to maintain substantially constant size when immersed in hot or cold water and subsequently dried, but sufficiently thin and lacking in adherence to gelatine to be capable, when dried after wetting, of being stripped from the gelatine layer. The support may be transparent and of vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer or polystyrene, or may be of cellulose acetate or ethyl cellulose, or of wax-coated celluloid. The gelatine may contain a pigment rendering the image produced readily visible. The sensitive layer may be produced by coating the support with an aqueous solution, of gelatine, ferric ammonium oxalate, glycerol lactate, and pigment. After exposure through the support, the exposed parts of the gelatine layer are hardened by treatment with a solution of an oxidizing agent, e.g. hydrogen peroxide or potassium dichromate, the unhardened gelatine is washed away in warm water, the gelatine image is pressed into contact with bolting silk or similar meshed material and allowed to dry, and the support is stripped off.
