Abstract

665,550. Thermionic valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 28, 1948 [May 29,1947], No. 14497/48. Class 39 (i). [Also in Group XL (c)] A high-frequency oscillator comprises an electrical discharge device having a cathode, grid, and anode, and means connecting the cathode and grid having substantially zero impedance at the oscillation frequency, and a resonant circuit tuned to this frequency and connected between the anode and the cathode grid unit. As shown, the discharge device comprises a cathode 10, grid 11 and anode 12. The grirl and cathode are connected for highfrequency current through an internal condenser 22 which offers substantiatly zero impedance at these frequencies. The resonant circuit linking the anode to the grid and cathode unit is a cavity resonator formed by tubes 25 and 26. Adjustment of the anode voltage by a movable contact 37 on a potentiometer varies the amplitude of oscillation obtained. Besides the output connections for high-frequency energy from the resonator, the only connections to the discharge device are direct current to heat the filament and impart fixed voltages to the electrodes. In a modification the anode may be replaced by a combination consisting of a grid backed by a reflecting electrode 39.
