Abstract

A mineral oil composition for use in metal coating processes comprises a blend of mineral oil, a hydrogenated fatty oil and an amine, the composition having an acid number between 3 and 15. Hydrogenated fatty oils used are hydrogenated animal, vegetable and marine oils and hydrogenated residuum and distillate fractions of these oils. The preferred amines are the high-boiling compounds and may be aliphatic, aromatic, cyclic or heterocyclic. Many examples of both additives are given. A typical example of a suitable composition is a mixture of hydrogenated fish oil distillates in mineral oil having an acid number of 15 and containing about 0.5 per cent of tetramethyl diamino diphenyl methane. High molecular fatty acids such as oleic and stearic acids, non-hydrogenated animal and vegetable oils such as coconut, castor, cottonseed and peanut oils, and synthetic lubricants produced by the polymerization of olefins may also be added to the compositions. Specifications 665,447 and 665,449 are referred to.ALSO:Metals are coated by a process which includes cleaning and pickling the metal, passing it through a molten flux bath and then through a bath of molten tin, lead or a mixture of lead and tin, and finally passing the metal through an oil composition, maintained at an elevated temperature, comprising a blend of mineral oil, a hydrogenated fatty oil and an amine, the composition having an acid number between 3 and 15. Hydrogenated fatty oils used are hydrogenated animal, vegetable and marine oils and hydrogenated residuum and distillate fractions of these oils.
