Abstract
665,302. Slicing-machines. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, H., July 13, 1950 [March 1, 1949], No. 5511/49. Class 28 (ii). In a slicing machine in which the food holder 10 can be skewed to the plane of the knife 12 the carrier can be gradually and automatically restored to normal position, such restoring action beginning at any position selected by the operator. The machine is adapted for cutting a piece of meat with a skewed end. It can then be set to begin correcting or restoring this skewed setting to normal setting in the course of which tapered slices .are cut off. Thereafter normal cutting of parallel sided slices is resumed. The 'base carriage 11 is reciprocated by a crank 13 and connecting rod 14 which carries a roller 16 to rock a lever 35, 36 pivoted at 37 the end 36 actuating a link 39 and attached arcuate rack 38 pivoted at 32 the rack rotating pinion 40 and so at each reciprocation rocking a shaft 24. Shaft 24 through a one way clutch 25 with an arm 21 causes a link 22 to actuate a ratchet and pawl 19, 20, Fig. 1 (not shown), to rotate the feed screw 18 one step at a time to move the undertable 17 by means of the usual half nut 18A. The undertable 17 supports the food holder 10. This step by step feed can be stopped by disconnecting the one way clutch 25 when the operator pushes a knob 28 whereby a tumbler 31 pushes the clutch-friction roller 25 along its convergent recess 26 so that there is then no friction rotation of the clutch. The undertable 17 is pivoted at 32 and so can be pivoted round by hand when freed to give the required skew cutting. The skew is gradually corrected to normal cutting by an actuating roller 41 projecting from the underside of the holder 10 through a slot 42 in the undertable 17, and engages the cam sides 44 of a plate 43. The plate 43 is slidable along guides 45 but is held fixed by a self locking device 46. This device can be unlocked bv the operator when he grips the lever of 46 against. a fixed hand grip 46a, so that he can slide 43 in its guides to selected position. The roller 41 also acts to automatically unlock 43 when it enters the apex of the angle between the two cam sides 44. As cutting on the skew proceeds the cam 44 forces the roller actuator 41 inwards thereby bringing the attached food holder gradually back to the position at right angles to the cutting disc. When the roller 41 reaches the apex of the V cam 44-44 it unlocks 43 so that it can advance with the step by step feed of 10 for further normal cutting. To prevent an excess of step by step feed owing to the addition of the correcting feed to the normal step by step feed a safety stop 28 is provided for the clutch 25 to allow the feed rack 38 to adjust itself to any angular variation in the position of the holder 10. In a simpler form, Fig. 5 and 6 (not shown), a left over end piece which is triangular is secured to a " last slice " holder which is skewed to fit one triangular side. As slicing is done the holder is turned step by step until it is parallel with the slicing knife, such action resulting in cutting a number of tapering slices.
