Abstract

Addition agents for crank-case lubricants of Diesel engines (see Group III) comprise oil-soluble metal-containing aromatic compounds containing an ester group and a metal mercaptide radicle MS-directly attached to the aromatic nucleus, but excluding compounds having an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 20 or more carbon atoms linked to the aromatic nucleus. These compounds may be prepared by first preparing an ester <FORM:0665091/IV (b)/1> where X is oxygen or sulphur and R and R1 are organic radicles at least one of which is aromatic and contains an SH group, and then replacing the hydrogen of the SH group with a metal. Various substituent groups including hydrocarbon radicles, halogens, oxygen - bearing radicles, nitrogen-bearing radicles including amides, and sulphur-bearing radicles including sulphonates which may be present are specified. Metal mercaptides specified include those of calcium, magnesium, barium, zinc and aluminium. Magnesium mercaptide of paramer-capto-phenyl thiololeate is prepared by stirring dithiohydroquinone with benzene, pyridine, and oleyl chloride, removing the precipitated pyridine hydrochloride, drying, and evaporating the benzene to give para-mercapto-phenyl oleate, which is treated with magnesium methoxide to give the magnesium compound. Calcium mercaptide of para-mercapto-benzyl oleate is prepared by refluxing sodium oleate with para-nitrobenzyl-bromide in toluene to give para-nitrobenzyl oleate, reducing by catalytic hydrogenation to the corresponding amino compound, diazotizing, and treating with potassium xanthogenate to give paramercapto-benzyl oleate which is then treated with calcium methoxide to give the calcium compound. Specification 665,107 is referred to.ALSO:A crankcase lubricant particularly for Diesel engines comprises a major proportion of mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble metal-containing aromatic compound containing an ester group and a metal mercaptide radicle MS-directly attached to the aromatic nucleus, but excluding compounds having an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 20 or more carbon atoms linked to the aromatic nucleus. The metal-containing aromatic compound may be prepared by first preparing an ester <FORM:0665091/III/1> where X is oxygen or sulphur and R and R1 are organic radicles, at least one of which is aromatic and contains an SH group, and then replacing the hydrogen of the SH group with a metal. Various substituent groups including hydrocarbon radicles, halogens, oxygen-bearing radicles, nitrogen-bearing radicles including amides, and sulphur-bearing radicles including sulphonates which may be present are specified. Metal mercaptides specified include those of calcium, magnesium, barium, zinc, and aluminium. Examples are given of the preparation of the magnesium mercaptide of para-mercapto-phenyl thiololeate and of the calcium mercaptide of paramercapto-benzyl oleate (see Group IV(b)).
