Abstract

664,494. Valves. REST, J. N. VAN, and CHOVIL, W. A. Jan. 28, 1949 [Feb. 9, 1948], No. 3801/48. Class 135. A tap comprises a cylindrical or frusto-conical plug provided with a passage there through and rotatable in a blind chamber in a housing to close an inlet port, and co-operating means on the plug and housing at both ends of the chamber which forcibly displace the plug in the chamber towards the port for sealing it. The ported plug 18 having graphite impregnated grommets 46, 50 secured thereto rotates in a bore 35 lined with a grommet 39. The bottom of the plug has a cam 58 moving in an eccentrically turned recess 60 while the operating handle 55 has a cylindrical flange 34 engaging an eccentrically turned portion 32 on the housing, so that as the plug is turned to closed position the imperforated part is pressed onto the inlet 40. In a modification, the plug has two staggered intersecting passages co-operating with two inlets and an outlet to form a mixing valve, the plug handle having a sprung lever and rod catch for engaging stops on the housing.
