Abstract

664,423. Packaging machines. ERMEN, G. A., and READING, H. C. April 20, 1950. [Jan. 20, 1949] No. 1657/49. Class 94(i). [Also in Group XXX] A packaging machine of the kind having means for introducing successively the articles to be packaged between two strips of thermo-plastic material and feeding the two strips with the articles between pressure and heating elements which are so shaped as to cause the strips to adhere to one another at locations around each article is provided with means for feeding the two strips. of thermoplastic material in an up-and-down direction step-by-step between two recessed flat-faced heated pressure members, means for moving said pressure members rectilinearly towards and away from one another in such timed relationship to said step-by-step movement that they clamp the strip between them around the recesses during the time when there is no relative movement between said strip and pressure members, and means for forming a slit or hole in the sealed strips between the articles whereby the material may be readily torn. Strips 38, 39 of thermoplastic wrapping material are intermittently fed by rollers 14, 15, driven by Geneva-wheel mechanism, between opposed, cam-reciprocated recessed and heated sealing jaws 25, 26, pills being fed therebetween in timed relationship to the movement of the jaws and strips, from a shoot 46. The temperature of the jaws is sufficient to seal the strip material but insufficient to embrittle it. A blade 66 slidable by cam means on the member carrying the jaw 26 forms a Y-shaped slit in the strip between the wrapped pills. The pills are fed from a vibrating tray 74, Fig. 7, down a shoot 76 and past an overflow shoot 81 to the shoot 46, at the base of which oppositely reciprocated slides 61, 62, Fig. 4, pivoted to a link 63 actuated through further link means by a pin 48 on a rotating disc 47, move to allow a single pill to drop between the strips between the jaws.
