Abstract
664,220. Packaging. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Oct. 12, 1949 [Nov. 5,. 1948], No. 26230/49. Class 94(i). A method of packaging material is characterised by the steps of introducing successive portions of the material step by step into a press, compressing the material endwise within lateral confining walls after each introduction until a compact mass is obtained, then transferring the mass endwise into a carton open at one end, and securing the ends of the carton in place. The press shown comprises a casing 15 separated by a vertically reciprocable apertured plate 20 into a compression chamber 18, and a packaging chamber 19 of slightly greater cross-section. In operation, a collapsed open-ended carton 41, Fig. 3, is fed from a magazine 35 by a reciprocating pusher 43 over an opened-out hinged side 36 of the chamber 19 into the said chamber, whereupon the side 36 is closed causing the carton to open out. A carton end from one of two magazines on either side of the casing 15 is fed down in front of a corresponding plunger 59 adapted to press it into one of two apertures in a plate 47, the plate 47 is then moved transversely of the casing 15 to present the carton end to a withdrawn ram 28 which is then actuated to push the carton end through the chamber 18 and an aperture 21 in the lower end of the raised plate 20 into the -far end of the carton body 41, the carton end being so presented to the ram that its peripheral flaps F are bent backwards. The ram is then withdrawn, the plate 20 dropped to close the end of the chamber 18, material to be baled fed through a hopper 32 to the chamber 18, and the ram moved forward to compress the material against the plate 20, the distance moved by the ram being dependent on the position of. a dog 69, on a rod carried by the ram plunger, which actuates a switch to reverse the movement of the ram. A plate 31a is magnetically held to the upper rear edge of the ram head to close the material inlet when the ram head moves forward. Further portions of material may then be fed into the chamber 18 and compressed by the ram, a fork 80 positioned adjacent the material inlet coming down to hold the compressed material when the ram is withdrawn. A pressure switch connected to a cylinder 30 in which the piston of the ram plunger moves is actuated when the material has been sufficiently compressed. Closing of the switch initiates a cycle of operations in which a carton end, with its peripheral flaps bent forwardly is fed to the ram 28 by the plate 47, the plate 20 is lifted and compressed material and the carton end fed together into the carton body 41 in the chamber 19. The ram is then stopped and a strip 86 of flexible strapping material is fed by feed rolls 87, 88 around grooves in the packaging chamber 19 and on the ram head 28 to encircle the package and is fastened by means inserted through a door 98 in the lower wall of the chamber 19. An end gate 33 of the chamber 19 is then lifted and the ram head advanced to eject the completed package. The ram head is then withdrawn, the gate 33 shut and a fresh carton body 41 fed to the chamber 19; a carton end is then pushed into the carton body 41 by the ram 28, the ram withdrawn, the. plate 20 lowered and the compression of the material commenced again. The various moving members are actuated hydraulically under the control of electrically operated valves. The chambers 18, 19 may be vertically arranged.
