664,197. Surface treatment of roads, roofs, etc. SOC. D'EXPLOITATION DES BREVETS D'INVENTION LEROUX (S.E.B.I.L.). March 7, 1949, No. 6123/49. Classes 20(iv) and 107. A process for the maintenance of hydrocarbonated coatings of roads, landing runways, terraces or roofs having a bituminous binder as a basis comprises spreading active products having as a base hydrocarbonated oils for softening the binder without any dissolving action, in the form of an emulsion, suspension, dispersion or solution which consists of not more than 25 per cent of such oils in at least 75 per cent of water. The Specification describes treatments using an emulsion of an anthracene oil for treating surfaces from or in which the binder has evaporated or polymerized or for treating surfaces in combination with a layer of sand when the binder is in excess. The treatments may be carried out at regular intervals of time as preventive measures. Examples are given of substances which may be added to the emulsion &c. and act as less volatile agents to increase resistance to aging, anti-oxidizing agents, agents to increase the adhesion between the binder and the aggregate, fillers containing colloidal products, or to fill up small fissures, e.g. rubber, synthetic resins and the like. To improve the action of the emulsion &c. it may contain volatile solvents or soaps. Specification 337,928, [Class 107], is referred to.
