Abstract
663,912. Building units; roofs; roofing tiles; doors; aircraft hangars. POOR, A. E. Classes 20(i), 20(ii), 20(iii), 20(iv) and 87(i)Feb. 27, 1947 [April 30, 1946], No. 5697/48. A building unit which may be used in the construction of aeroplane hangars, petrol pump islands, garages, workshops and bungalows, comprises a hexagonal upwardly convex roof supported by a central column 4, Fig. 2,3, and six radial cantilever trusses 1 which are connected together at their outer ends by marginal members 7. The roof frame is strengthened by tiebars 118, Fig. 2, so arranged as to detine a number of equilateral triangles and each of these is subdivided into four smaller triangles by purlins 12, Fig. 1, adapted to support and engage adjacent edges of triangular roof elements 9. Each element 9, Fig. 8, e.g. of aluminium sheet, may be formed with a central dome 10 from which ridges 11 run to the apices, and has turned down and inwardly flared edges 7a, Fig. 9, which engage in the U-shaped purlins 12. The top beams 2, Fig. 3, of the trusses 1 may have 'a similar U-shaped cross-section so that the triangular roof elements lying alongside the beams 2 may be clamped therein. The elements 9 have their apices meeting as, at 3, Fig. 1, each purlin 12, Fig. 12, terminating short of the centre of the joint and a central bolt 15 secures a cap 13 over the central aperture thus formed. Sliding doors may be hung from the marginal members 7 by means of runners, and interior partitions provided to subdivide the interior. The units may be joined together in various ways to form buildings of larger roof spans, e.g. as shown in Fig. 6, the indentations round the circumference of the integrated roof span being filled with triangular units 8. The outer edge of the roof span may support a series of sliding doors each composed of elements 24-29, Fig. 15, mounted on tracks on the roof so that they can be shifted from the closed position to the open position shown in Fig. 16. A door may be built up from frame members similar to the purlins 12 to which triangular elements 9 are secured. Two of the triangular areas are closed by insets 30, Figs. 17, 18, of glass or plastic which are secured to a metal frame 31a by means of rabetted clamping members 31 and screws 32.
