663,577. Artificial respiration apparatus. HANDLEY, D. B., and HANDLEY, D. M. M. April 27, 1950 [March 31, 1949], No. 8749/49. Class 81 (ii) An appliance for promoting respiration, primarily for newly born infants, comprises a mechanically rocked couch having deep enclosing walls to retain warm air or oxygen. In the form described, a cot, comprising a base 5 with perpendicular walls, is mounted on a horizontal pivot 12 on a casing 1, containing a motor 3 driving a crank 15 which oscillates the cot through a pivoted link 13. The motor drive is taken through a worm gear to a cone pulley 30 driving a complementary pulley 32 through a belt, the transverse position of which is determined by an adjustable guide 33 so as to vary the rate of oscillation as required. The cot may have transparent drawblinds 45 forming a top cover and is provided with a valve 38 through which oxygen may be admitted from a cylinder 40, this passing either directly to the interior or being distributed by a hollow end wall 6. Transparent heating panels 42 may be provided in a side wall and, to avoid danger from static charges on the side walls, these are sprayed with a metallic grid 47 which is earthed.
