Abstract

A hydraulic fluid is made by adding a liquid ester of ortho-silicic acid to a mixture of ethyl or methyl alcohol and an ethylene glycol and adding so much water and catalyst as will effect partial hydrolysis of the ortho-silicate. The mixture is allowed to stand to effect polymerization of the hydrolysis products and give a stable fluid. In examples: (1) 500 gms. each of monoethylene glycol and ethanol are mixed with 208 gms. of ethyl orthosilicate and 18 gms. of water, using phthalic anhydride as catalyst; (2) 624 gms. of ethyl orthosilicate are mixed with the glycol/ethanol mixture of (1) and 54 to 75 gms. of water using phthalic anhydride as catalyst; (3) as in (2) but using a volatile catalyst such as hydrochloric acid and followed by concentration under reduced pressure. Methyl or phenyl orthosilicates may be used.
