Abstract
The production in purified form of individual components of a mixture consisting mainly of acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, alcohols, oxides, acetals, acetaldehyde, and higher complex aldehydes, e.g. a fraction of the products of the partial oxidation in vapour phase of hydrocarbons such as propane or butane, is effected by catalytically hydrogenating until the higher aldehydes and part of the ketones are reduced to hydroxy compounds, and thereafter separating individual components. Hydrogenation may be effected with Raney nickel and free hydrogen at 300-2000 p.s.i. and 150-250 DEG F., the pH being kept at 5-7, using 3-12 per cent by weight of catalyst, for a time of about 1-2 hours. The mixture of catalyst and organic compounds may be passed through a series of vertical towers while introducing hydrogen, preferably in excess, and which may be recycled, into the base of the first tower. After separating catalyst by settling, the product is fractionally distilled and extracted to separate acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methanol, tetrahydrofurane, n-propanol, isopropanol, and the butanols.
