A stair rod a has combined with each of its ends a slide b mounted on the front face of the rod with a rearwardly extending end piece e terminating in a claw f which engages behind an eyepiece k. Endwise detachment of the slide is prevented by a peg c extending into a slot d in the rod. A spring h exerts a frictional grip on the rod.
