Abstract

661,688. Ratchet gearing. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Feb. 22, 1949 [June 19, 1948], No. 4823/49. Class 80 (iii). A ratchet mechanism, particularly suitable for the feeding mechanism of machine tools, comprises a driven sleeve 24 and ratchet wheel 25, a driving pawl 61 carried on a rocking arm 21 and a hydraulic actuating piston and cylinder 37, 36. Fluid pressure is alternately supplied to and exhausted from the cylinder 36 by means of valves operated by cams on a machine shaft so that the arm 21 is rocked in one direction by the fluid pressure against springs 54, 55 and in the other direction by the springs. The engagement of the pawl 61 with the ratchet wheel 25 is controlled to vary the rate of feed imparted to a tool 16 through a screw 33 by means of a control pawl 62 rotatable with but slidable axially on the shaft 59 of the main pawl 61 and co-operating with a series of control ratchet wheels 84-93 frictionally mounted upon a sleeve 95. Each of these wheels has the same number of teeth which is comprised of a number of shallow teeth 119, Fig. 8, and a number of deep teeth 121 which are different for each wheel. The arrangement is such that when the pawl 62 is engaged with the .shallow teeth 119 the control wheel is advanced one tooth but the main pawl 61 is held out of engagement with the teeth of the wheel 25. When the pawl 62 moves into a deep tooth 121, however, the pawl 61 engages the teeth of wheel 25 to advance sleeve 24 one tooth also. Thus the rate of feed imparted depends upon the frequency of the deep teeth 121 around the wheels 84-93. The desired control ratchet is selected by sliding the pawl 62 along the shaft 59 of the main pawl 61 by means of a fork member 72 of a nut 74 on an adjusting screw 75, Fig. 7. The screw 75 has an adjusting knob 81 with a scale 82 indicating the adjusted rate of feed. When changing the pawl 62 from one control wheel to another the pawl is lifted by means of a lever 106 rocking a shaft 104 which has a slot 105 therein receiving a curved arm 100 attached to the pawl 61. A number of such mechanisms may be arranged on a lathe to operate separate tools and be actuated from a common pressure fluid supply pipe.
