A flow control fitting for pipe lines has a clamp section B telescopically mounted within a body section A, a plate C adapted to be clamped between faces 26, 27 on the respective sections AB, and an annular member 50 spaced from said faces and arranged in the body section A and around the clamp section for moving the sections axially relative to one another. The section A has a well or chamber 11 to receive the plate C through a passage 12. The annular member 50 engages a worm 61 on a transverse operating stem 60 by means of external teeth 62 and has internal threads 52 engaging corresponding threads on the inner part of the clamp section B. The annular member 50 is arranged in a counter-bore 20 closed by a flange 22. Balls 53 in grooves 54 allow the member 50 to rotate whilst preventing axial movement thereof. The inner end 18 of the clamp section B slides in a bore 17 having a packing 37. The counter-bore 20 has a packing 23. A projection 80 on the body section engages between spaced lugs 81 on the clamp section to prevent relative rotation whilst allowing relative axial movement. The stem 60 is operated by a cross member with spokes 70 and one of its bearings 65 is carried in a threaded tubular extension 67 locked by a set screw 71. The plate C comprises a solid end 40 and an apertured end 41 joined by a neck 43, both ends being grooved to receive packing rings 44. The two sections A, B have flanges 14 for connection to pipes or the like and the flange 14 on the body section A is joined to the side walls 31 of the passage 12 by reinforcing bars or ties 33. The body section A has a lubricant fitting 74 and a drain plug 47. In addition openings 55 closed by removable plugs 56 are provided for the insertion of the balls 53. A modification adapted for connection to pipe lines by welding is described.
