Abstract

661,335. Valve relay circuits. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. July 8, 1949 [July 9, 1948], No. 18105/49. Class 40 (vi). A trigger-pair circuit comprises two valves cross-coupled with resistors between the anode and control grids and with a capacitor connected between the anode and control grid of each valve, so that when a triggering pulse is applied to either control grid the switching of the circuit from one of its two stable states to the other, occurs only after a time delay. The Figure shows a trigger-pair circuit comprising valves 10 and 11 cross connected by resistors 22, 19 and 24, 17 and with a common cathode resistor 15. Capacitors 26 and 28 are connected in feed-back circuits between the anode and control grid circuits of valves 10 and 11 respectively, so that when positive triggering pulses are applied to either input 29 or 34 the circuit only changes over after a predetermined delay dependent on the value of feed-back capacitors. The circuit will thus only change-over if the trigger pulses have at least a predetermined duration, e.g. if capacitors 26, 28 are each of 0.005 microfarad, the triggering pulses to effect a change-over must must be of at least 2,000 microseconds duration. The cathode resistor 15 tends to prevent the non-conducting tube becoming conductive when the current flow through the conductive tube is increased by a positive triggering pulse applied at the input. When positive going pulses are applied simultaneously or with a time interval at two inputs 29, 34 the current will not change over unless the interval between the two triggering pulses is greater than some predetermined value, e.g. 2,000 microseconds when capacitors 26, 28 have values of 0.005 microfarad. The circuit is thus protected against triggering by spurious noise pulses.
