Abstract
661,151. Lathes. HAYHURST & CO., Ltd., R. H. Oct. 24, 1949, No. 27285/49. Class 83 (iii). Means for turning dowelling or similar cylindrical rods comprises a cutter head 5, 7 mounted on a hollow driven shaft 1, a sleeve 12 inserted from the outer end of the shaft, a holed cap 19 on the outer end 7 of the cutter head and a cutter 15 fitted between the sleeve 12 and the cap 19. Bearings in a housing 2 support the shaft and it is driven by a chain and sprocket 3, 4 connected to a reversible drive. The work is fed into the cutter through a guide-tube 26, guide and clamping rollers 27 and the cap 19 and emerges from the sleeve past guide-rollers 29. The removable cutter comprises a basering 16 and integral splayed arms 15 of semi. circular section with cutting edges 24 along the lengths of each side. The flange 5 and externally-threaded ring 7 on the cutter head are connected by arms 6 and the base-ring 16 of the cutter is fitted into a recess in the sleeve 12, the arms of the cutter extending into slots in the cap 19, which is secured in the ring 7 by a stop 10 and knurled nut 7b. In a modified cutter, which allows slight adjustment of the cutting diameter, the arms 15 are bulged at 25 to strengthen them and then curved at 25a so that they may be sprung inwards by a collar 21 screwing on a boss 18 of the cap 19; the end of the collar is bevelled to engage the ends of the cutter arms and slots 22 in the boss allow movement of these arms.
