Abstract

660,978. Catamenial tampons. OAKLEY, J. L. D. (International Cellucotton Products Co.). Nov. 21, 1949, No. 29730/49. Class 81 (ii). An apparatus for adjusting and finishing the parts of a tampon comprises means for holding the applicator body while pressing the tampon in to a predetermined position, pressing the ejector tube into contact with the tampon and softening the end of the tampon. The tampons are received from a supply chute assembled but not adjusted and are intermittently stepped forward through a series of rest positions by a link belt 19 having upwardly projecting pegs 20 for engaging the tampons. As each one advances, a stepped guide 9e drives the applicator tube 2 towards a side guide 47. In the position A a plunger 49, carried on a cross-head 50, presses the ejector 4 into the applicator tube 2 until it engages the inner end of the tampon. In the following position B a narrow plunger 58 engages the end 3 of the tampon and thrusts it inwards to the desired extent, the applicator 2 being held by the step 9c. At C a second plunger 65 on cross-head 50 pushes the entire assembly forward, the ejector being in engagement with the tampon, whereupon the head is shaped by being pressed into a countersunk recess 67, from which a plunger 66 disengages it prior to its passing through two idle positions to position D, where the projecting end 3 is fluffed and softened by a rotating and reciprocating head 74, having radial teeth on its circular end face except for an eccentric recess, see Fig. 10 (not shown) so that the end of the tampon is softened to an extent increasing from the centre outwards. Finally the end of the tampon is flattened by a plunger 100 without compacting it and an interlocking tab 5 is punched through the applicator and ejector tubes by a fluid-actuated triangular punch, the finished tampon then being passed to a packing machine.
