660,282. Making turbine blades; rotting. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Sept. 28, 1949 [Oct. 8, 1948], No. 26250/48. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). In a method of making turbine blades and the like from blanks having accurately machined side faces 3, 4 and roughed-out leading and trailing edges, the latter are finished to the required shape by swaging with a grooved reciprocating roll 20. A blank 14 is held by end portions 1 with its leading edge uppermost so that it may be shaped by a roll 20 on a reciprocating carriage 18, the roll being freely slidable on a journal 19 so that it may take up the lateral position located by the faces 3, 4. The vertical descent of the carriage may be governed by stops and the rolls may be either driven or free. In making blanks with tapered blades the grooves in the rolls may be of varying cross-section, the rolls being positively driven by rack-and-pinion so that the blade and roll are kept in their correct relative position. A segmental portion of the roll may also be removed to clear the enlarged end of the blade at the root. The method is also suitable for forming edges on blades with varying inlet angles. For small variations the blade may be mounted with the mean inlet angle held vertical, the change in angle being accommodated by varying the section of the groove. For large variations in inlet angle the blade is rotated about a longitudinal axis by gearing synchronized with the roll reciprocating mechanism. Grooves of the required shape may be formed in the rolls by rolling them before hardening over hardened steel master patterns which may be rotated in synchronism with the relative movement of the rolls in the same manner as the blade is to be. rotated when large variations of inlet angle are required.
