Abstract
659,848. Mercury electrode apparatus. MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. April 11, 1949, No. 9778. Convention date, June 15, 1948. [Class 41] A cell for the electrolysis of alkali-metal compounds, for example, sodium chloride, using a mercury cathode, comprises a conducting bottom 1 on which the amalgam flows, sides 3 provided with rubber linings, a cover 6 with several holes, a rubber lining 7 extending through the holes and folded over the edges, anode sections 20, a metal lead-in 11 attached to each anode section and provided with screwthreads for engagement by an adjusting nut 23, means for supporting the nut 23, a rubber sleeve 24 surrounding the lead-in, and means in engagement with the lead-in and the rubber sleeve to keep gases and liquids out of contact with the lead-in. As shown, the cover 6 is provided with channel bars 12, 13 to which are welded respectively, angle clips 14, 15 forming slots to receive the end of a plate 18. A ring 25 is pressed against the edge of the sleeve 24 by means of screws 26, 27 bearing against the plate 18. The sleeve 24 is clamped to a porcelain pipe 30 sealed at the bottom to the anode by a rubber gasket 31 and at the top by a fibre gasket 33 against which an anode bias clamp 32 is screwed down on the lead-in. The lead-in pipe at the bottom is secured in a threaded hole in the anode, the lead-in having holes 21 whereby molten lead poured into the pipe is interlocked. Before assembly the part of the anode around the hole is impregnated, for example with a drying oil, to prevent chlorine from attacking the lead.
