Abstract

659,792. Knitting. MACK, S. C., and KAYSER & CO., J. May 20, 1944, No. 9783. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1943. [Class 74 (ii)] A knitted fashioned stocking blank or other fabric, having loops forming wales and courses, includes a course containing at at least one end thereof, at least three adjacent groups of over. lapped loops, each group comprising loops from different wales, and a course interlooped with the last-named course and comprising loops holding together the loops of the several groups, so as to substantially narrow the fabric. In knitting the heel of a single unit stocking, Fig. 3, widening is carried out from A-A to B-B and, thereafter, courses of uniform length are knitted to D-D. The last course of the leg section, which also forms the final course of each of the heel parts, is then subjected to a number of narrowing operations to produce the coursewise row of fashioning marks 25 and to shorten it from D to d, giving each heel part a curved edge 26. The extent of narrowing and the number of courses of uniform width may be such as to provide an additional straight edge 24 to impart extra "fullness." The toe is partly fashioned by means of gores 29 in the usual manner; but the final fashioning is effected by narrowing operations carried out on the course F 1 F, to produce a single row of fashioning marks 33. Consecutive steps in a method of narrowing a course are shown in Fig. 6. Trans. fer points 45, 46, remove the two end loops 47, 48 of the course from the needles 47N, 48N and place them two wales inwardly on to needles 49N, 50N (line H). An additional transfer point 51 is now brought into use (line I) by an inward one-needle movement of the narrowing comb and the loops are transferred two wales inwardly from what are now the three end needles 52N, 49N, 50N of the course to needles 53N, 54N, 52N (line J). The process is continued as desired (lines K-P) and the next course 40 is then knitted on all needles holding loops. This produces the structure of Fig. 6a, in which groups are formed by triads of loops from alternate wales. Fig. 5 depicts a structure in which the three loops of a triad are from adjacent wales. In a two-unit stocking, the heel tabs 63, 64, Fig. 8, are given rounded edge parts 65 by loop-transference in a single course indicated by the fashioning marks 66 which may be arranged very close to, or may be taken up completely in the seam of the stocking. The narrowed course is run-resistant and all the edges of the stocking may be secured by a continuous seam extending from the welt edge to and through the toe tip. The heel, sole and toe fabrics are reinforced.
