Abstract

659,444. Rotary disc filters. HUNTER, H. M., DICKEY. G. D., and GENTER, A. L. March 4, 1949, No. 6045. [Class 46] The lateral edges of the sector filtering elements of a sectionalized continuous suction disc-filter converge inwardly from the disc perimeter and are tangential to a circle concentric with the disc shaft whereby upon rotation of the disc the trailing edge of each element on the submerging side of the disc becomes horizontal at a level below the shaft axis. As shown in Fig. 9 the filtering sector elements are mounted between and supported by spaced tubular spokes 58 secured to the shafting 59 by means of rods 67 extending through the spokes 58 and threaded into the shaftring 59, the said rods 67 being provided at their outer ends with means for closing the outer ends of the spokes 58, e.g. by metallic bushings 66. A cross channel member 69 which together with spoke 58 and channel side member 71 forms a frame for the sector filter elements constitutes a drainage connection between members 58 and 71 and communicates with the interior of spokes 58 by a slotted opening 70 in the wall of spoke 58. The outer edge of the channel side member is transversely concaved as at 72, Fig. 10, to co-operate with the spoke 58 of the adjacent sector. A backing plate for the filter medium e.g. a corrugated plate 73 is secured in the frame, the passages or corrugations draining into the channel member 71, and also into the spoke 58 through openings 75. The interior of the spokes 58 fit telescopically over centring nipples 64 communicating with openings 60 in the ring 59 said openings forming part of the filtrate conduits of the shaft. Alternatively the tubular spoke 58 may be replaced by a channel member, and an outlet neck then projecting from the crosschannel member such as 69, in parallel relation to the leading spoke which in this case takes the form of a rod such as 67 secured at one end to the shaft ring 59 and, by means of a finger bearing on the edge of the backing plate, clamps the sector element with its neck outlet telescopingly fitted over a nipple communicating with the filtrate conduits of the shaft. The filter shaft 12, Fig. 18, comprises ring sections 13 such as ring section 59, Fig. 9; and intermediate relatively wide spacer sections 14 held together by means of bolts 18 which extend through a shoulder on bearing portion 15 and through a closure cap forming a part of bearing portion 16. Tank extensions 29 receive each disc filter individually and permit dropping the cakes discharged from the filters by scrapers 32 and 33, by gravity through the space 30 between said extensions. The opposite portion of the tank 11 receives the discs collectively. The backing plate may consist of a plurality of pieces held together in the frame by means of a bolt 57, Fig. 9.
