[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Groups II, V and XXIX] A conveyer 17 feeds shredded clay from a mixing plant 16 to a transverse conveyer 19 via shoot 18, the conveyer 19 feeding a number of vertical worm extruding machines 11- 14 (see Group V). Adjacent each machine is provided a plough 22 pivoted at 67 at its forward end and adapted to be moved across the belt to intercept and feed clay to the associated machine in response to a fall in the level of clay in the extrusion cylinder, and to be moved to an inoperative position when the clay in the cylinder rises to a certain level. Pivoted feelers resting on the body of clay in the cylinder operate a valve 63 to admit air to one or other end of a pneumatic cylinder 66 controlling movement of the plough 22 and also to one or other end of a cylinder 76 controlling the opening and closing of a gate 82 at the foot of a shoot 21 leading from the conveyer 19 adjacent the plough 22 to the hopper 41 of the extrusion machine. The shoot 21 is open but may be enclosed at its upper end to enable a mist of oil to be injected for lubrication purposes. A continuously reciprocating pusher feeds the clay from the hopper to the extrusion cylinder beneath the pivoted feelers. Successive ploughs 22, Fig. 1, are arranged to sweep successive portions (as shown, successive quarters) of the width of the conveyer. Surplus clay is returned to the conveyer 17 by shoot 23 conveyer 24 and shoot 26. In a modification employing an extrusion machine having a worm feed from its hopper to the extension cylinder which operates only when the machine is extruding, there is no gate 82, and an overriding control is provided to prevent clay being fed from the conveyer to the hopper when the machine is not working. It is stated that the control devices may be mechanical, hydraulic, electric or combinations of these, instead of pneumatic. According to the Provisional Specification (i) the control mechanism may be set to bring the plough to various positions across the conveyer; (ii) a gate may be used at the foot of the shoot feeding the machine incorporating a worm feed; (iii) the feeding shoot is of semi-circular section.
