Abstract

<PICT:0657715/III/1> In the separation of immiscible liquids, the liquid mixture is caused to flow over a substantially plane membrane 24 which is adapted to repel one liquid and be wetted by another and which is slightly inclined to the horizontal and spaced from the bottom of a receptacle 2, the repelled liquid passing over partition 7 and being withdrawn at 29 and the other liquid passing through the membrane, assisted by vacuum applied at 28 or pressure applied to the upper surface of the membrane, and being withdrawn at 27. The mixture is preferably passed upwardly into chamber 16 and through a coalescing membrane 14 prior to passage over the membrane 24. The liquid withdrawn at 29 may be passed through a second and similar separating chamber, the membrane in this case being adapted to repel the liquid which was passed by the first separating membrane. The process is useful for the separation of the constituents of a water in hydrocarbon oil emulsion. Specification 628,464 is referred to.
