Abstract

657,083. Emptying tanks. SAUNDERS-ROE, Ltd., and WHITTING, L. K. Jan. 19, 1949, No. 1502. [Class 21] [Also in Group XXIX] A gravity-operated valve 15 for emptying the wing fuel tanks of an aircraft comprises a tubular casing 23 having two fuel inlets and a fuel outlet 31, a valve member with valve heads 28 thereon being slidable between alternative end positions when the casing 23 is tilted due to change of attitude of the aircraft so that the inlet at the higher level is sealed to prevent the entry of air whilst the lower inlet is open to allow the passage of fuel from the tank. As shown, the valve 15 is supported on the base of a wing tank 12 in the fore and aft direction. The tubular casing 23 has end casings 24 fitted with filters 25. The valve member comprises an inner tube 26 containing loose balls 32 and connected to bars 27 on each of which a valve head 28 is universally mounted. The valve member is guided in the casing 23 by pairs of rollers 29 arranged in slots 30 and having their axes at right-angles to one another. The outlet to the fuel pump is through an aperture 31. The Specification shows the application of the valve to the inboard and outboard fuel tanks which are connected to the fuel pump through a valve as described in Specification 657,082.
