Abstract
656,572. Tip-up seats. HALLAM SLEIGH & CHESTON, Ltd. March 16, 1948, No. 7823. [Class 52 (v)] A tip-up seat comprises a torsion bar which causes the seat to tip up when released from a horizontal position. The seat bottom 1 has an underframe to which are attached side flanges 8, 9. A fixed rear attachment member 10 has brackets 11, 12 between which the seat bottom is pivotally attached. These side brackets receive flanged caps 13, 14 which have square-sectional recesses to receive trunnion members 15, 16. The trunnion members have square holes to receive the ends 2a, 2b of a laminated torsion bar. The circular aperture of a square bush 22 forms a bearing for the circular shaft of the trunnion 15 so the trunnion 15 is rotatable within the cup 13. The square head 19 of the trunnion is closely engaged by the cap 14 thus holding it against rotation. A bush 24 similar to bush 22 can turn around the circular part 20 of the trunnion 16. A square tube 25 rigidly secured to the seat bottom has one end connected to the trunnion 15 and the other connected to the square bush 24. As the seat is moved to the horizontal position the tube 25 turns with the seat bottom and rotates the trunnion member 15 the other end tube turning freely on the fixed trunnion 16. The bar 2 is thus twisted about its axis and on release of the seat causes it to tip up to its out of use position. Stops are provided to limit the upward and downward movements.
