Abstract
656,516. Colour filters. EDWARDS, B. J., JOHNSTONE, D. M., and PYE, Ltd. April 25, 1947, No. 11092. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Groups XL (a) and XL (b)] A colour interference filter comprises an array of iridescent particles suspended in a suitable medium and is controlled electrically to vary the orientation of the particles relative to the incident light so that the colour of the emergent beam is varied. As shown in Fig. 3 the filter 16 is mounted on the end wall of a cathode-ray tube 10 used in a colour television transmitting apparatus (see Group XL (b)), and the particles 31 are suspended in a film 32 of elastic material enclosed within transparent electrodes 18, 19. A glass plate 33 separates the electrode 19 from a photocathode 11 and a collimating screen 34 is interposed between the filter 16 and the wall of the tube. The filter of the television receiving apparatus is generally similar and is described in connection with Fig. 4 (not shown). The Specification refers to a colour interference filter formed by a quartz plate whose thickness is varied electrically by electrostriction or magnetstriction to effect desired colour selection.
