Abstract

656,373. Electrically heated de-icing pads. GOODRICH CO., B. F. Jan. 10, 1949. No. 637. Convention date, April 17, 1948. [Class 39(iii)] An electrically heated de-icing covering comprises a pair of spaced apart and longitudinally arranged supply conductors 43, 44 and a resistance element 41 extending from one conductor 43 across and beyond the region between the conductors and then back and forth past both conductors in a looped disposition to terminate at the other conductor 44, the resistance element being insulated from the current conductors at its crossing points by rubber and fabric insulating strips. There may be a plurality of these elements disposed along the extent of the conductors. The arrangement gives the covering its greatest heat intensity between the current con ductors, the cover being applied to an airfoil such that the leading edge is protected by this more highly heated area. In a modification each resistance element extends from one conductor across and beyond the region between the conductors and then back to the other conductor. The electrical assembly is preferably vulcanized within a body of resilient rubber-like material reinforced in both faces by embedded fabric 48, 49 to which the assembly may be secured. The supply conductors may be of flexible, braided wire in flat strip form.
