Abstract
A composition which may be formed into sheets or coatings comprises a hydrophobic aerogel and a latex of a synthetic rubber or synthetic resin. The sheets or coatings formed will readily transmit moisture vapour but prevent the passage of liquid water. The aerogel may be silica aerogel, rendered hydrophobic by treatment with an alkoxy chlorosilane or an alkoxy aminosilane such as ditertiary-(butoxy or amoxy)-diaminosilane. The hydrophobic particles may be mixed with the latex containing a dispersing agent such as methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, or zinc di-2-ethyl hexyl sulphosuccinate. Alternatively the hydrophobic particles may first be dispersed in water containing the dispersing agent to form a cream which is added to the latex. The latex may contain a polyvinyl compound, poly-butadiene, neoprene, or the substance sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Vistanex" alone, in admixture with one another or with natural latex. Fibres, e.g. glass, resin, asbestos, or paper fibres, may be added, as may the usual vulcanizing ingredients, antioxidants, colours, and dyes such as methylene blue. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use, instead of aerogel particles, of diatomaceous earth, silex, flyash, tripoli, or ordinary silica gel. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 655,677.ALSO:A film, sheet or coating, which readily transmits moisture vapour but prevents the passage of liquid water comprises hydrophobic aerogel particles bonded in a material formed of the solids deposited from natural or synthetic rubber latex. The aerogel may be silica aerogel, which is rendered hydrophobic by adding thereto 8-15 per cent of an alkoxy chlorosilane or an alkoxy aminosilane such as di-tertiarybutoxy or amoxy) - diaminosilane and thoroughly mixing in a tumbler. The hydrophobic particles may be mixed directly with latex containing a dispersing agent such as methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, or zinc di-2-ethyl hexyl sulphosuccinate. Alternatively the hydrophobic aerogel particles may first be dispersed in water containing the dispersing agent to form a cream which is added to latex. The synthetic rubber latex may contain neoprene or poly-butadiene or the material sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Vistanex." A mixture of neoprene latex and natural rubber latex may be used. Fibres, e.g. glass, resin, asbestos, or paper fibres, may be added, as may the usual vulcanizing ingredients, antioxidants, colouring material, and dyes such as methylene blue. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use, instead of aerogel particles, of diatomaceous earth, silex, flyash, tripoli, or ordinary silica gel. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 655,677.
