Abstract

655,375. Coated sheet materials; compound fabrics. DEARBORN CHEMICAL CO. Jan. 8, 1948, No. 640. Convention date, March 11, 1939. [Class 140] A covering material adapted to adhere to a metallic surface comprises a pliable sheet of non-fibrous cellulosic material such as regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or nitrate, coated on both sides with a vapour and moisture-proof composition which is of high dielectric strength, has a petrolatum base, an A.S.T.M. melting point between 140‹ and 175‹ F., an A.S.T.M. penetration of 30 to 45 using 100 grammes at 77‹ F. for 5 seconds, and sufficient tackiness to provide self-sealing surfaces. Alternatively the coating may include a petrolatum base having an A.S.T.M. melting point of between 125‹ and 160‹ F. and an A.S.T.M. penetration of over 35, using 100 grammes at 77‹ F. for 5 seconds. The latter composition may also include a paraffin wax having an A.S.T.M. melting point of from 140‹ to 160‹ F. and an A.S.T.M. penetration of from 5 to 15 using 100 grammes at 77‹ F. for 5 seconds or a mixture of a wax such as paraffin wax having an A.S.T.M. melting point of from 120‹ to 135‹ F. with a small amount of rosin, carnauba wax, candelilla wax or montan wax. The material sold under the Registered Trade Mark of NO-OX-ID," having a hydrocarbon base and containing chemicals for inhibiting corrosion, may also be used. The coating material may be thinned by solvents or by heat and applied by brushing, spraying or dipping. Two strips of the cellulosic material may be secured together, but spaced apart by an adhesive, which may be the petrolatum composition, which coats them externally; a sheet of fibrous material such as asbestos or Kraft paper, may be interposed between outer non-fibrous cellulosic sheets, and be similarly united to them. The coated material may be formed by unwinding the cellulosic sheet 5 from a roll 7, passing it over a roll 9 and then under a roll 10 which is at least partly immersed in a bath 11 of the petrolatum composition, which has been liquefied by heat or by a hydrocarbon solvent such as kerosene, naphtha, or oleum spirits. It then passes between rolls 12 and 13 which may be adjustably mounted to control the thickness of the coating, and which produce a smooth surface, and is finally wound in a roll 8.
