Abstract
654,460. Paper and like bags. RANDALL, J. W., and DICKENSON & CO.. Ltd., J. June 15, 1948, No. 16035. [Class 94(ii)] In manufacturing reinforced flat-bottomed collapsable bags, a web W, Fig. 1, of flexible material, which may be transparent, is mechanically fed to bag-tube forming mechanism 16, 19, while webs R, R<SP>1</SP> of comparatively stiff material are formed, in mechanisms 15 and 18 respectively, into respective pieces 3 and 4 which are suitably creased or otherwise weakened for subsequent folding, and the said pieces are then brought into face-to-face relation with each bag-tube length of the flexible material so as to become united with the latter in the formation of the bag-tube. Finally, one end of the formed bag-tube and the corresponding parts of the reinforcing pieces are folded and sealed by mechanism 21 to complete a bottom for the bag, so that when the latter is opened the said pieces reinforce the bottom and the opposed longitudinal walls of the bag. The reinforcing pieces are secured to the web by strips a, b, c, d, Fig. 2, applied to the web by means 13, Fig. 1, so as to extend in two transverse rows across the bottom end of each bag length. The piece 3 is imposed on the strip a, when a first gusset-folding in the means 16 brings the strips b face upwards above the piece 3 and turns the strips c downwards to contact the piece 3. The piece 4 is then laid upon the upturned strips b, when the second gusset-folding in the means 19 turns the strips d downwards to contact the piece 4 and brings the longitudinal edges of the tube into overlapping mutually adhering relation. The completed bag, of the plain satchel type, is shown in Fig. 3. In a modification, a single piece of stiff material is used for reinforcing the bottom and one longitudinal side of the bag. The Specification also describes various modifications of the method as applied to the manufacture of block-bottom bags having both gusseted and plain side walls. The reinforcing pieces are shown incorporated either in the front and back walls, or in the side walls whether gusseted or plain. When the front and rear walls of block-bottom bags are reinforced, an additional reinforcing patch is inserted in the bottom of each bag, but this patch may be omitted when the side walls are reinforced. The flexible and reinforcing materials may be secured together by heatsealing adhesive. For carrying the bags, apertures may be cut in the extended reinforcing strips.
