654,104. Weighing-apparatus. WILLIAMS, L. S., and TOLEDO SCALE CO. May 5, 1947, No. 12011. [Class 143] A weighing- scale pendulum having, as claimed in Specification 625,830, a capacity weight adjustable along a straight track which is vertical when the power arm is a maxinum, has means for applying an initial moment by way of a sectorconcentric with pivotal axis. Such means, which may be a weigh or spring, is adjustable so that, by appropriately apportioning the initial pull between it and the pendulum, linearity is preserved during capacity adjustment. In Figs. 2 and 4, a pair of pendulums 89 are fulcrumed at 92 and have eccentric power sectors. 88 connected by ribbons 87 to the scale lever 71. Capacity weights 93 are adjustable along straight tracks 91 set at right-angles to the line joining the turning centree 92 and the power-sector centre 114. Adjustment is effected by turning a screw 118 in the bottom of a T-slot 117 in each pendulum casting and engaged with a nut 119 secured to the weight. The means for applying an initial moment comprises a loading frame 84 consisting of a pair of weights in the form of receptacles 98, 99 partially filled with lead and to which additional adjustment weights may be added. The receptacles are joined by a cross-bar 100 and each contacts a sector 90 on the pendulum concentric with its axis 92 and is connected to the sector by a ribbon 101. Vertical movement of the loading frame is transmitted to an indicator drum 77 by way of a rod 106, adjustably connected to a lug on the receptacle 98 and having rack teeth 85 bearing against a pinion on the drum spindle. A somewhat modified scale, Figs. 10, 13 (not shown) has a rotatable pointer indicator, and the adjustment weights are perforated discs which can be stacked on pins upstanding from shelves at either side of the loading frame. In Figs. 14 and 16, the arrangement of the pendulums 168, 169, with their capacity weights 183 adjustable along tracks 181, 182 and eccentric power sectors 186, is similar but the loading frame is replaced by a pair of springs 190 (one only shown), at either side of the pendulum. The ends of the springs are connected to ribbons 191, 192 overlying sectors 189 concentric with the pivotal centres of the pendulums and terminating in connections 193 with the pendulum castings. The connections 193 are adjustable by nuts 195 so that the tension in the springs can be varied as required to secure linearity. The rate of the springs can also be adjusted, their connections with the ribbons being by washers threaded into the end coils and one washer being rotatable. Indicators. The indicator in Figs. 14 and 16 comprises an optical system for projecting the image of a scale 172, carried by the pendulum 169, onto a screen 178 visible through a window 179. A lamp 174 and condenser on one side of the scale 172, together with a lens on the other side, project the image onto the screen by way of mirrors 175, 176 and 177. An adjustable weight 199 counterbalances the scale 172.
