[Class 120(iii)] [Also in Group VIII] Apparatus for testing the fastness properties of dyeings on textiles,. under wet conditions, comprises test liquid holders b, fitted into a bath a adapted to be heated, in each of which is disposed two rubbing or friction surfaces adapted to be mechanically moved relatively to each other under regulable pressure and in contact with a dyed textile sample s positioned between them so that the sample, immersed in a test liquid, e.g. soap solution, is subjected to a process of rubbing, one friction surface being formed by the upper surface of the bottom c of each test liquid holder and the other friction surface being formed by the lower surface of a reciprocable rubbing device i lying, under regulable pressure, on the bottom of each holder. As shown, water in a bath a is maintained at a desired temperature by thermostaticallycontrolled electrical heating elements q, stirring paddles p<1> being provided on a rotary shaft p. Scrubbers k carrying the rubbing shoes i are pivotally mounted on a shaft g which is reciprocated in slots f in end supports d by engagement with eccentric slots h<1> in driving wheels h ; shoe i is thus reciprocated relative to the corrugated bottom c of each holder b. Each scrubber k is loaded by a weighted lever n which can be swung back to rest on the driving shaft e when not in use. The material s under test may be in skein form, a dyed skein being plaited together with one of white wool and one of white cotton and secured on the rubbing surface of the friction shoe, the extent of the discolouration after test being determined visually.
