Abstract
652,262. Electric selective signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 17, 1947, No. 33289. Convention date, June 1, 1943. [Class 40 (i)] In a code signalling system each signal consists of a constant number of alternating current code elements at one or the other of two frequencies f1, f2. At the receiver each signal element steps a counter and recording means and the positions of the signal elements of one only of the frequencies (marks) are recorded in their relative sequential positions. Fig. 2 shows the receiver for a system using a four element code catering for ten different digits. The relays F1r, F2r respond respectively to impulses at frequencies f1 (space) and f2 (mark). On receipt of the first signal element the relay B1 energizes in series with the normally energized relay A1. Relay A2 energizes as the first impulse ends, and when the second impulse starts B2 energizes in series with A2 and A1, B1 relapse. Similarly, at the end of the second impulse A3 energizes, and at the start of the third impulse, B3 energizes in series with A3, and A2, B2 relapse, and so on for the fourth impulse at the end of which relays A4, B4 are held in series until receipt of the next signal. The counting relay chain A1, B1, &c. is sequentially operated in this manner by the received code elements, irrespective of the frequency thereof to step a recording unit correspondingly. When a code element is of frequency f2 earth is extended by the relay F2r to actuate the appropriate recording magnet R1 ... R4, according to the operative element of the counting relay chain, to record a " mark." Modification. A different number of signal elements may be used for the code and, in a modification, the relay F1r may be aperiodic or otherwise adapted to respond to either of the signal frequencies and alone operates the counting chain, relay F2r functioning exclusively to operate the respective recording magnets.
