Abstract

652,163. Forging screw-threads; making wood-screws. BULLONERIA E VITERIA ITALIANA B.E.V.I. Dec. 10, 1947, No. 32575. Convention date, April 27, 1946. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A process for manufacturing wood-screws comprises successive forging operations by threaded dies operating transversely to the length of a cold metal blank of round section, characterized in that the part of the blank which is to have the thread is first forged to an approximately rectangular or oval section and then a pair of dies operate on the edges of the blank along the line of its major axis to produce partial threads, and change the sectional shape of the blank to contract its major axis and expand its minor axis, after which a second pair of dies close on to the work at opposite sides and complete the thread and change the sectional shape of the blank to circular form. A round metal blank 1 is forged to substantially rectangular section 3, thence to a substantially elliptical rough-threaded section 6 in dies 4, 41, and finished in dies 7, 71. The wire 1 may comprise a continuous length which is shaped at intervals along its length. The dies may be shaped to produce screws having tapered shanks.
