[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XVII Apparatus for classifying thin sheets of ferrous material at high speed comprises a substantially horizontal belt for conveying the sheets at high speed and an electromagnet disposed beneath the upper reach of the belt for holding the sheets down on the belt thereby preventing planing through the air. A strip of tin plate passes through a motor-driven edge trimmer, dust removing felt pads, a continuous gauging device, a roller level, pinch rolls and adjustable rotary shear. The sheets S then pass on to a conveyer belt 30 driven by a motor 31 running at a higher speed than the shear past a deflector 32 pivotally mounted on a shaft 33 and raised and lowered by a solenoid 34 controlled by the gauging device. The sheets pass to belts 35 driven at a slower speed by a motor 36, then on to belts 37 with further reduction of speed by the motor 38, thence to belts 39 at a slightly lower level and driven at a still slower speed by a motor 43, so that the sheets overlap. The sheets pass between concave and convex rolls 40 and 41, which are spring-urged into contact and one is driven. The sheets then pass over a driven roll 42 and are discharged in a pile on to the elevating platform 44, being guided by adjustable side members 47, a member 46 and an end stop 45. If a sheet of incorrect thickness passes the gauging device, the gauge, which comprises two small rollers, the distance between which varies and controls an electric supply to the solenoid controlling the deflector, which is raised and deflects the sheets downwardly past three guiding rollers on to a lower series of belts which operate in the same manner as the upper series. Magnets M and M<1> are disposed beneath the belts at the ends and intermediately are adjustably mounted. The coils for the magnets M and M<1> at the ends of the belts are incorporated in recesses in the brackets supporting the end pulleys. The magnets intermediate the ends are movably mounted on rods connecting the end pulley brackets. A slidable member is mounted on these rods at one end, and connected to a fixed frame member, so that by sliding the member along the rod the belt pivots about the pulley shaft at the other end, the shaft and bracket member being concentrically mounted, and the height of the belt is adjusted. The belt can be tensioned by moving the brackets along the rods by means of a nut. The motor mechanism and belts are mounted on a girder extending along one side of the apparatus. The speeds of the belts may be independently or simultaneously adjusted by a Ward-Leonard control system.
