[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 30, 1947.] [Class 140] In apparatus wherein laths disposed in parallel are fed on to felt previously coated with bituminous adhesive so as to lie transversely, the laths are fed in edge-to-edge contact to a roll having guides which cause the laths to pass around the roll and form wedgeshaped gaps between the edges of adjacent laths, and a continuous length of felt is coated with adhesive and pressed on to the laths passing around the roll, so that bituminous adhesive material on the felt is pressed into the gaps to provide spacing means for the laths when the felt lies flat. Laths 16 are fed from a table 17 around a drum 19 on which they are retained by a curved guide 27. The laths are then fed by frictionally-driven toothed wheels 22 on to a conveyer belt 24 running at a slower speed so that the laths are maintained in tight contact edge-to-edge on the belt and while they pass thereafter around roll 30. In passing around roll 30 wedge-shaped gaps are formed between the edges of adjacent laths, and pressure roll 15 presses against the laths carried by roller 30 a felt band which has been coated with bituminous adhesive by a reversely-rotating roller 11 dipping in a trough 12. The composite material is then cooled and rolled up. The reverse side of the felt may be previously coated with bitumen applied by roll 5 on which is deposited mineral particles by a device 9.
