Abstract

651,241. Suction dredgers. HARTLEY, C. J. Dec. 7, 1948, No. 31618. [Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group I] In apparatus in which a dredger sucks up settled matter through a pipe depending into one of two or more parallel settlement channels, the depending length of pipe is carried in a frame pivoted to the dredger and depending downwards for a sufficient distance to hold the pipe firmly, the pipe being connected at its upper end by a length of flexible hose to a pump to enable the pipe to be raised and lowered. As shown, a pump 18, Fig. 1, mounted on a crosstraverser carriage 16 movable on girders 15 spanning channels 10, Fig. 2, is connected by a bend 25 and a length of flexible hose 26 to a pipe 27 fixed or slidably supported in a frame 22. The frame 22 is pivoted at 21 to brackets 20 secured to the carriage 16 and may be raised and lowered by a winch 30 when the carriage is traversed from one channel to another. The girders 15 with others 13 form a carriage mounted on rails 12 on the outer walls of the tank (one not shown). Grit is discharged from the pump into a launder 36 and flows thence by pipe 37 into a channel 38 in the top of a dividing wall 39. The members 22 may be extended upwards beyond their pivots 21 and their upper ends held in engagement with suitable fixed brackets by locking pins which need to be withdrawn prior to raising the pipe. The invention may be applied to dredgers which do not travel along the channels but may traverse from one channel to another.
