Abstract

651,195. Fluid pressure disc brakes; automatic adjustment to compensate for wear. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1946, No. 33096. Convention date, April 16. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake of the type in which blocks 19, 23 (Fig. 2), of friction material are clamped for braking against opposite faces of a rotating disc 21 by a hydraulic piston and cylinder device 29, 24 and in which the release position of the piston 29 is automatically adjusted to compensate for wear of the friction blocks, the piston and cylinder device is supported resiliently from a fixed bracket by means which are also automatically adjusted to compensate for wear of the friction blocks. The cylinder 24 comprises members 13 and 14 fitted together at 14a and secured by cap screws 13a. The piston 29 is normally withdrawn by a conical spring 36a secured at its periphery to the piston and abutting against a disc 32 engaging the head of a pin 33 which serves as an abutment for the piston in its release position. The pin 33 is held by a deformable ring 37 compressed by a nut 35 ; if owing to wear of the blocks 19, 23 the force in the spring 36a rises abnormally during braking the pin 33 is pulled through the ring 37 to effect the necessary adjustment. The members 13, 14 carry at each side lugs 13b, 14b (Fig. 3), connected by a bolt 15. On each bolt 15 is mounted a sleeve 38 sliding within a boss 16 formed on a flange 11 supporting the braking means. A collar 43 is mounted on a reduced portion 39 of the sleeve 38 and between the collar 43 and the sleeve 38 are mounted rings 41 comprising split washer-like members whose radial thickness decreases towards the split and which, while remaining circular, tend to expand into frictional engagement with the boss 16. Conical spring 42 abutting the rings 41 and the collars 43 normally permit movement of the lugs 13b, 14b, and thus of the members 13 and 14, relatively to the bosses 16 ; if however, owing to wear of the friction blocks 19, 23, the force in the springs 42 rises abnormally during braking the frictional grip of the rings 41 on the bosses 16 is overcome and the members 13, 14 are permanently adjusted relatively to the bosses. Sealing means 44a, 44b (Fig. 3), and 45, 46 (Fig. 2), exclude entry of dirt or leakage of pressure fluid. Specification 583,596 is referred to.
