Abstract

651,152. Electric indicating systems. LOVE, J. A. May 14, 1948, No. 13324. [Class 40 (i)] In an electric flowmeter fluid passes through a tubular conduit containing a heater coil H intermediately of two double balanced temperature-sensitive resistance coils R1, R2, all disposed in recesses in a heat insulating lining to leave a central bore. The halves of the resistance coils are connected as opposite arms of a D.C. Wheatstone bridge whose unbalance voltage energizes the control winding W of a saturable A.C. fed transformer T1 having its secondary differentially connected with the secondary of a similar transformer T2 without a control winding, to serially energize the heater coil, a rectifier meter N, and an integrating meter I. The bridge is balanced when the downstream resistance, to which the heater is nearer, is at a slightly higher temperature than the upstream resistance, so that at zero flow the unbalance voltage regulates the heater current to a value just sufficient to maintain the system in equilibrium. Increased flow reduces the downstream resistance temperature and the increased unbalance voltage adjusts the heater current to a correspondingly higher value, at which equilibrium is again restored, and the meter N indicates the rate of flow, while the integrating meter I measures the total flow. The rate of flow meter may be resistance shunted to vary the range or rectifier shunted to give a logarithmic response.
