Abstract

Lead salts of fatty acids are prepared by mixing lead monoxide and a long-chain saturated fatty acid containing from 6 to 30 carbon atoms in amounts so that for each 2 mols. of fatty acid there are present from 1 to 3 mols. of lead monoxide in an aqueous slurry and in the presence of a catalyst. The catalysts are aliphatic compounds containing combined oxygen which are at least sparingly water-soluble. The reaction may be carried out at an elevated temperature, e.g. between 25 DEG and 65 DEG C. Suitable catalysts are saturated alcohols and ethers containing from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, e.g. monohydric alcohols such as isobutanol, or glycol ethers such as ethylene glycol monobutyl ether or diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. The quantities of reactants may be such that the water is present in an amount of 3 to 16 parts by weight of the lead monoxide and from 2 per cent to 15 per cent of the weight of water of an aliphatic alcohol or ether containing from 2 to 8 carbon atoms. In the examples lead salts of stearic, pelargonic and myristic acids and basic lead salts of stearic, caproic and lauric acids are prepared. Another acid mentioned is melissic acid.
