Abstract

A fermentation process for the production of substances other than penicillin, such as streptomycin, riboflavin, and vitabin B12 comprises growing the culture in or on a medium containing the solids from a penicillin fermentation. These solids are filtered off from the penicillin mash and may then be hydrolysed. They are preferably sterilized before adding to the main culture medium. In an example, streptomycin is produced by growing Streptomyces griseus on a medium consisting of penicillin solids 1 per cent, glucose 1 per cent, sodium chloride 0.5 per cent, magnesium sulphate 0.025 per cent, ferrous sulphate 0.001 per cent and the remainder water. Malt extract, corn steep liquor, peptones, vegetable meals or extracts such as pea extract, fish meal, and dried or autolysed yeast may also be added. Specification 613,469 is referred to.ALSO:A fermentation process for the production of substances other than penicillin, such as streptomycin, riboflavin, and vitamin B12 comprises growing the culture in or on a medium containing the solids from a penicillin fermentation.
