Abstract
649,450. Sporting guns. CHEVALLIER, A. L., and SOCHACZEWSKI, S. April 1, 1948, No. 9217. [Class 119] A single-barrelled sporting gun adapted to fire two cartridges in rapid succession comprises a barrel 1, a breech frame 2, a rotary breech bolt 13, Fig. 9, slidably mounted in a raceway 5, a transverse slot through the frame forming a side loading aperture 11, Fig. 3, and an ejection aperture 10 on the other side, a floating inertiacontrolled member 37, Fig. 1, loosely coupled with the breech bolt and slidable longitudinally on the breech frame, manually-operated means 23 engaging the underside of the breech bolt for unlocking and opening the breech and an automatic quick-loading attachment 48, Fig. 13, or Fig. 17, for the second cartridge 49 mounted over said loading aperture 11. In the form shown, the rotary breech bolt 13 (not shown in Fig. 1) has a fixed head 14, Fig. 9, with a guide wing 15, Fig. 10, moving in a longitudinal groove 16 in the frame and a projection 17 moving in a groove 18. The breech bolt is locked after a quarter turn by a rib 19 engaging a recess 20 in the frame. Locking and unlocking of the bolt is effected by a sliding fore end through a drive rod 23 and a tooth 28 engaging the bolt 13 and head 14 in the locked position. On rearward movement of the drive rod, the tooth 28 engages a cam groove 31 in the bolt to unlock and drive the bolt to the rear in race 5, cock the hammer 32 and extract and eject the cartridge case. The drive rod is locked in forward position by a pivoted spring-urged plate 33 released by the shock of discharge or by button 36. The inertia hood 37 absorbs recoil and locks the bolt against opening in case of hang fire. The hood is urged rearwards by V springs and moves forward on discharge for a peg 46 to engage the breech bolt and reshape the cartridge case to facilitate extraction. After unlocking rotation of bolt, peg 46 can engage groove 47, Fig. 10, in the bolt during the opening movement. The loader 48, Fig. 13, for the second cartridge 49 has a hinged spring-pressed lid 50 and is secured over the opening 11 by rabbets 54 and slideway 55. The cartridge 49 is pressed by a spring pin 60 on closing the lid against the first cartridge so that automatic loading of the second cartridge occurs after the breech opens and the first case is extracted and ejected. The firing pin 65, Fig. 9, has a rear cam face 67 to cause retraction during unlocking rotation of the bolt and firing can only take place when the bolt is locked. The inertia hood is made of steel and is heavy in relation to the other gun parts made of aluminium alloy. In the alternative loader, Fig. 17, the cartridge 49 bearing against a part 146 of the hinge under the pressure of a spring 145 keeps the loader closed until the first case is extracted when the lid springs open and the part 146 flicks the second cartridge into loading position.
