Abstract

648,177. Light choppers. SCOLES, G. J., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1948, No. 32046. [Class 40 (iii)] A vibrating-reed light chopper such as that described in Specification 642,697 is driven from the output of the photocell. In a pyrometer, light or heat rays passing to a photo-cell P are chopped by a shutter S mounted on a reed R driven by an electromagnet M. The photocell output is amplified at A1 and passed through a detector to the pyrometer indicator I. Part of the amplified signal is fed through a 90 degrees phase-shift circuit F, so that the current is suitably-phased with the movement of the reed, and through a limiting amplifier A2 which converts it to a constant amplitude rectangular wave to an output stage O for energizing the operating coil C of the electromagnet M. Thus the chopper frequency is determined by the natural resonance of the reed unit.
