Abstract
1,193,577. Measuring water content, using micro-wave absorption. POLSKA AKADEMIA NAUK ZAKLAD DOSWIADCZALNY BUDOWY APARATURY NAUKOWEJ "UNIPAN". Aug. 9, 1968 [Aug.10, 1967], No.38172/68. Heading G1N. Apparatus for measuring the water content of a layer 5 of a solid or liquid substance comprises a micro-wave generator 1 connected to a magic T bridge 2, one side arm of which is connected to a micro-wave aerial 4 for emitting and receiving micro-waves which pass through the test layer 5 and are reflected by a metal reflector 6, spaced from the layer 5 by an odd multiple of quarter wavelengths, the other side arm being connected to means 3 for providing a reference reflected wave of adjustable phase and amplitude. The output from the bridge 2 is passed through a calibrated variable attenuator 7, detected by a diode (9), amplified by linear and logarithmic amplifiers (10, 11) to produce a signal of amplitude linearly dependent on the water content of the layer 5 which signal is fed to an indicator (13) and recorder (14) and to an alarm signalling circuit (16, 17) which receives a comparison signal from a low frequency sinewave generator (15) which amplitude modulates the micro-wave generator (1). An electromechanical control system may be provided for controlling drying or humidifying of the test layer 5 or for adjusting the phase and amplitude of the reference signal from means 3.
