[Class 4] An aircraft launching-device which comprises a self-propelled carriage, a cradle adapted to support an aircraft and rotatably mounted on the carriage to orientate the aircraft in the direction of the wind, securing means for holding an aircraft to the cradle and means for releasing the securing means, is characterized by the fact that retaining means are provided for maintaining the cradle stationary with respect to the carriage which comprises its own steering means as well as means for releasing the retaining means after a certain speed has been attained and for enabling the aircraft to be automatically orientated in the direction of the wind. In the embodiment shown a low chassis mounts a cradle 10 for attachment to an aircraft fuselage 11. The carriage is driven by either piston or jet engines or a combination of both. Fig. 1 shows front and rear steering wheels 4 and 5 respectively, twin driving wheels 6 and supporting wheels 6a. To launch an aircraft the carriage is driven beneath it and the cradle 10 is raised from resilient abutments 15 by a screw device 14a acting on the ball-joint 14 until locking devices 17 engage the aircraft fuselage. Struts 18 are then erected to support the cradle corners, the aircraft undercarriage is retracted and the assembly moves along the runway. At a suitable speed the struts 18 are swung down and the aircraft oriented into the rotative wind. When the take-off speed is reached the locking devices 17 are disengaged and the aircraft is released. The cradle is prevented from tilting and fouling the aircraft by a double fin 13 mounted on a beam 12. Wings 1 on the carriage provide a downward thrust to compensate for the lift of the aircraft before it is released and flaps 2a in vertical fins 2 are used to brake the carriage after it is released. Further rapid braking may be obtained by means of a parachute. Rudders 3 assist the fins 2 in stabilizing the carriage during launching. The weight of the carriage may be increased by ballast, e.g. water tanks, to increase wheel adhesion.
