Abstract

647,314. Casting-machines : pouring-apparatus. SOC. POMPES NOEL., and BOUCHER, J. June 22, 1948, No. 16728. [Class 83 (i)] A feeding device for a centrifugal casting- machine comprises a tilting ladle 1, adapted to hold enough metal for a number of castings, which is tilted through successive angles to charge successively a series of moulds as these are moved into casting position. This may be effected by a projection 49 on the mould carrier 9 striking, as it moves in the direction of the arrow f and just before it reaches the broken-line position, an arm 46 of a valve 42 to admit pressure fluid at a rate controlled by a cock 44 to a cylinder 17c, thus causing a piston 17b rapidly to tilt the ladle 1 through a small angle. The pressure fluid also passes a non-return valve 38 into a cylinder 34, the piston 33 of which closes a clutch 28 causing a constantly-running motor 31 to drive a gear 26 and slowly raise a segment 19, rod 17 and ladle 1 to pour the metal required into the trough 6. The mould is then moved to the right and a projection 48 strikes an arm 47 and reverses the valve to exhaust the pipe 39 and cylinder 17c, thus rapidly tilting the ladle back a little and stopping the pour. The cylinder 34 is slowly exhausted through the preset cock 37, a spring 35 opening the clutch 28 and stopping the rise of the segment 19, a brake 21 being arranged to prevent it from falling back. This operation is repeated each time a mould is fed over the trough 6 until the ladle is substantially empty. Then the brake 21 is released by pulling a handle 25 and the ladle is returned to its original position for refilling. Pouring may be stopped at any time by opening a cock 40. To prevent cooling the ladle has a hinged and counterbalanced lid 52, Fig. 3, with a refractory lining having a scum retaining ridge 62. In a modification the brake drum 20 is connected to the segment 19 by a lost-motion device 78, Fig. 8, so that the segment does fall back a little when the clutch is opened. Unclutching may be accelerated by opening the cock 37 wide. In a modification the ladle has two spouts 4a, 4b, Fig. 7, to feed two moulds (not shown), at each movement. In this case one pivot 70 is adjustable to ensure equal flow through each spout.
