Abstract
Building or insulating slabs or sheets are manufactured by incorporating cement, water-glass, plaster, lime, magnesite, or other cold-setting inorganic binding agent with stalks of the reed Phragmites Communis which have been split longitudinally so that the binding agent can have access to the inner and outer surface of the stalks. Calcium chloride or borax may also be added to the mix. Small quantities of the leaves or flowers of the reeds may be included but they are preferably removed before the stalks are split. The reeds are preferably split in the apparatus comprising an adjusting device with guiding plates for placing the reed stalks into substantially parallel position, feazing devices having knives or teeth for splitting the reed stalks longitudinally and means such as feeding rollers or endless belts adapted to convey the parallel stalks from the adjusting device to the feeding device which is described in Group II.
